Dr. Boahene was born in Kumasi, Ghana, in 1965, and he grew up in Accra. He attended Achimota School, a prestigious boarding school in Ghana, before moving to the United States to attend college. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 1985, and his Medical degree from the same institution in 1989.
After completing his residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dr. Boahene went on to complete a fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. He then returned to Johns Hopkins to begin his career as a plastic surgeon.
Dr. Boahene’s work has been widely recognized in the medical community. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association’s Global Achievement Award and the Society of Black Academic Surgeons’ Lifetime Achievement Award. He has also been featured in various media outlets, including The New York Times, CNN, and National Public Radio.
In addition to his work as a surgeon, Dr. Boahene is also involved in philanthropic efforts in his home country of Ghana. He founded the Kofi Boahene Foundation, which provides medical supplies and equipment to hospitals in Ghana, and he has also worked with the Smile Train organization to provide cleft lip and palate surgeries to children in need.
